We love building new pools for our clients and their families, but what really makes us happy is seeing our pools come to life surrounded by beautiful landscaping.

Many of our clients come up with unique and stunning landscaping designs to create the ultimate space for their family and friends to relax and enjoy our hot Queensland summers.

Drawing from our own experience, as well as design ideas we’ve come across with our lovely clients, here are our top 8 landscaping tips for your new pool.

Entertaining areas are essential

Like most Australian families, we love entertaining, so for us incorporating an entertaining area into your pool landscaping is a no-brainer. A pool is more than an area for swimming and sunbaking, it’s also a great space to entertain and relax with family and friends.

As Gold Coasters, we live most of our lives outside, so it makes sense to include an outdoor entertaining area in your pool landscaping. Whether it’s an outdoor kitchen to enjoy with your friends, or a fire pit to sit by at night, the possibilities are endless when it comes to designing poolside entertaining areas.

Always choose the right plants

Choosing the right plants to frame your pool takes careful consideration. While you might love flowering trees, they just aren’t practical and you’ll spend your days scooping flowers and leaves out of your pool.

We believe it’s best to keep the landscaping around your pool as low maintenance as possible, avoiding plants that shed, have large roots, spiky plants that could cause injury to children playing around the pool or plants which need a lot of attention.

Plants also have a dual purpose, helping you create privacy around your pool. Soft hedging, ficus or tropical plants look great and provide great screening to create a private oasis in your backyard.

A water feature for resort-like vibes

We love it when our clients create resort-like vibes and include a water feature in their pool landscaping, after all, who doesn’t love the peaceful sound of trickling water.

Water features don’t only add aesthetic value, kids love them and it’s a great way to add more fun and interest to your pool area.

Outdoor shower

After seeing hundreds of pool landscaping designs, we think an outdoor shower is the perfect addition next to your pool. It’s handy to rinse off before and after a swim and there’s so many awesome designs available to suit your individual taste.

Make space for shade

Let’s face it, summers are hot in Queensland, so creating a shaded area near your pool will allow you to stay outside and enjoy it for longer. Whether it’s a gazebo, or patio cover or a large palm tree, a shaded area is a great way to protect you and your family from UV rays and it gives you a nice space to retreat to when the sun gets too hot.

Lighting is everything

Don’t you love how pools look at night time? Clever lighting ideas can make a huge difference to the appearance of your pool at night and can create a real vibe.

Lights placed strategically throughout your landscaping can bring the plants to life and can set the scene for a beautiful night in your backyard. A well-lit pool sets the mood and we guarantee you’ll be diving in for more late night swims.

Raised multi-level decking

Gone are the days of single-level pool decking. In the past few years we’ve seen a big movement towards raised, multi-level decking, which is a great way to create separate zones and fully utilise the space around your pool.

Make it your own

In the end, the most important thing is to ensure your pool landscaping fits in with your lifestyle and works for your family. Think about how you’ll use the space and how to get the most out of the design.

Make it your own. We love it when our clients inject a little personality into their pool landscaping design. Whether it’s making the space family-friendly with fun additions for kids, or adding beautiful features like paving, mosaics or beautiful garden beds.
